I had made it my policy not to respond to others' comments on my work, believing that everyone has a right to their opinion. However I think I'm missing a valuable opportunity to open a dialogue with folks who have been kind enough to view my work.

So, first of all, thanks again to all who have taken the time to watch "The Truth About Me". I actually wrote it as a stage play in response to the shootings at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado years ago. The play is called "Sensitivity, USA" and as of today has been produced 25 times, most recently at Riverheads High School in Staunton, Virginia. It exists as the original 25-minute version and also as a 10-minute version.

This film was adapted from the 25-minute version of the play and the 10-minute version of the play was actually adapted from this film.

The original title "Sensitivity, USA" was intended as a slight parody of all those "sensitive" television dramas named after towns such as "Beverly Hills, 90210" or "One Tree Hill". The film's name was intended to be a little misleading, since hopefully it reveals truths about both of the characters.

The film was shot in Santa Monica, California in 2007.

The Columbine tragedy really hit me when I read a TIME or NEWSWEEK article that included the yearbook photos of all the kids who had been killed as well as those that did the killing. I speculated that the killers had been jealous and resentful of many of those they had killed, probably because of their popularity, and wondered how and why a conversation might have taken place between two members of the "opposing" sides.

I saw "The Breakfast Club" when it came out in 1985 but not since, and I tried to watch "High School Musical" once but only made it halfway through. (I think the DVD failed.)

The "awkward relationship bit" is the point of the film. Just as "Romeo and Juliet" was about "breaking barriers between cliques", so, too, was a possibility for love between these two characters probably the only way for them to ever see each other as equals. To leave out the "will you date me? thing" would have removed the stakes for both people.

Regarding the "pacing is really out of whack" comment, uh, it may have been out of whack for that viewer but unless that viewer gives a reason for why it was out of whack -- a reason that actually resonates for the editor -- the editor will not re-edit the film because for the editor the pacing was not out of whack since that is the pace at which he chose to edit the film.

This was an interesting short film. I enjoyed the cinematography more than anything else. The best moment was from 1:33-37 with the close-ups on their eyes and and his mouth. It just pulled us into the characters and the situation.

It was frustratingly predictable though. I was hoping for something a little more original. This was the same old high-school "break the status quo" romance film we've seen a million times. It's like the breakfast club, but more contrived; like High School Musical, but less annoying. I was most frustrated by the arc of the film. I really felt like we were going somewhere until the awkward relationship bit came in. I feel like if the film had just been left at an exploration of these two characters as a metaphor for breaking barriers between cliques in high-school it would have been just as good, if not better. The "will you date me?" thing distracted from the point of the film.

Aside from the predictability of the plot I also felt like the actors lines were kind of forced. I think this film would be considerably better if the actors had just acted a little more natural. I know that's a difficult critique, but it just felt awkward.

The writing is the best thing about this. Its ok for a short.
