Reviews

From Critical Corner:

Evans provides a taught, suspense-laden roller coaster, and I'd be hard-pressed to say I have seen a better indie this year. Definitely right on target, 'A Lonely Place for Dying' is a direct hit.

I'm not going to comment on how much money movies seem to make here in donations and what the consequences of that may or may not be. However, on the ALPFD website, they said back in June last year "The film will be broken into five installments which can be downloaded through VODO and it's network of online distributors. The fifth and final installment will be available after the film's theatrical release beginning in January, 2012."

We're in February now, still looking at part one of five. Draw your own conclusions...

I'm very very excited to see the next episodes of this awesome movie, too. I guess the best thing we can do now is donate a dollar and tell our friends about it and tell our friends to tell their friends to...

I mean, I wouldn't blame these guys if they'd intend to only release the next part after having reached their 10k funding goal for the first episode.

As HumbleMagi wrote before "Imagine if every download resulted in a single dollar donation." - technically, with all these payment methods available (bitcoin and flattr rock :) ), this shouldn't be a difficulty for anybody, should it?

Holy fuck, just noticed, A Lonely Place For Dying, Part 1, is the 20th most requested torrent of _all_ torrents during the last two weeks according to the DHT database according to http://btdigg.org/top100.html? Even higher than for instance the most requested Pirates of the Carribean torrent? Am I misinterpreting this page in some way?

Man, it'd be totally awesome if one day soonish a Creative Commons movie would actually appear on torrentfreak.com's "Top 10 Most Pirated Movies on BitTorrent" of the week. And would give some new hope to an end to the current cold war on copyright...

it was not included in the top10 for ideological reasons, but was #1 most shared torrent on earth for a week or so.

Hi Koolfy, I spoke to TorrentFreak about this. I don't think that it was discluded from the list; afaik, it just barely failed to scrape in on the stats that they had that week. I do know that TorrentFreak doesn't exclude on ideological grounds -- STEAL THIS FILM II made it in, for example, back in the day.

Post reply

Yes I may have misused the term "ideological", I should have used a word more like "technicality" or "measurement method". I remember reading about that but couldn't recall nor find the exact reason.

Anyway, not being in the list doesn't change the fact that it was/is huge on torrent. It would have been a cool symbol, but nothing more.

Plus, I bet that when the whole movie is released on torrent, it'll logarithmically kick torrentfreak's most pirated movies's scale's ass.

FWIW- I spoke to my dad again, and he said that the targeting information that his group compiled wasn't limited to Vietnam, but included Cambodia and Laos as well. (He'd never told me this before this evening.) He seemed quite sure (and gave a number of reasons why) that the air force would not have carpet bombed Vientiane. I also looked up Operation Tailhook on his urging, and it seems there's a strong possibility that it was tear gas and not sarin that was used.

Of course, since ALPFD is a work of fiction, these issues needn't detract from it's value as an exciting spy thriller/action film.

Post reply

You might want to look up Operation Tailwind instead of Tailhook. "Tailhook" involved hazing rituals performed aboard a naval vessel in the mid-1980's while Operation Tailwind involved the use of chemical weapons during Vietnam.

We never mention Operation Tailwind in the film and so it isn't relevant.

And, while I respect your father's service, he wasn't part of the CIA and our sources made it clear that B-52 bombers did indeed carpet bomb large parts of Laos.

Kurt, you seem truly interested in this subject matter. My suggestion is reading some books on the subject and taking some classes. I wish you the best as you study this subject!

Post reply

Oops. Yes, I meant Tailwind. I do remember Tailhook now that you mention it. :)

Perhaps I should do some research on this. I think that it may be important to me because I can see how my father has conflicted feelings about these things and at the very least it would be good to know what was done by the CIA rather than the USAF.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I certainly appreciate it & I hope that the rest of your film gets posted to vodo soon :)

Post reply

Your father doesn't have to feel conflicted. What the USAF did publicly has little relationship to what the CIA did privately.

I can only see predefined incentivised donation links $5-$5000, cant find a general donation link so how does one make a donation $1 - $4. I'll be happy to make a donation as soon as i can find a general donation link.

I have torrented and seeded alpfd part 1 and enjoyed what i have seen so far and looking forward to remaining parts.

I applaud your efforts in film making/method of distribution and hope that both are successful.
