Archon Defender is a solo production by Director David T. Krupicz, who created this 65 minute feature film during a 3 year production, using obsolete older versions of production software running on second hand computers.

This is one of the most unusual offerings here at VODO. Some elements are really great and others are... well let's just say not great.

-What's Good-

The story is an interesting one. You could consider it to be either inspired by or derivative of (depending upon your point of view) the eastern philosophy infused Jedi versus Sith plot at the center of the Star Wars trilogies. Krupicz has created a unique world in which to set the film and I think that he has fully realized that vision. While the tale may seem a tad familiar to many viewers, it is easily as good if not better than most anime works.

He also has a real flair for 'virtual camera' work. Many scenes which could have been relatively dull in less talented hands are made compelling by the movement and angle of the camera. Best of all, his designs for the art, architecture, transports, and technology are truly impressive. I think that the film may be worth watching for that alone. Krupicz unquestionably has a real talent for designing visually interesting objects and movement.

-What's Bad-

Much of what is bad are things that you cannot really blame on the creator given the restrictions he was working under; nonetheless, they are shortcomings which do detract from one's enjoyment of the film, and therefore cannot be ignored.

The voice acting was very bad. It was so wooden and hollow that I initially wondered if the voices might have been somehow computer generated. It seems the voices were provided by volunteers who sound as if they are just reading the text aloud with little or no emotion. Obviously, that isn't an indictment of the talent of the filmmaker if this was all that he had available to him, but that still doesn't make the performances any better.

The bodies and faces of the animated characters reminded me of nothing so much as Playmobil toys. They had no perceptible facial expressions and their features were all identical. The only way to tell them apart was by skin tone and their hairstyle and color. The arms were jointed in the wrong places and the elbows were 2 dimensional. The legs didn't move well when walking running or standing still. The rendering of hair and liquids was so bad that it actually made me laugh a bit in totally inappropriate moments. All of these problems result from the software that the filmmaker was using. I'm not saying at all that he didn't do a good job with what he had to work with; I'm saying that he was so limited by what he was working with that the result was destined to be seriously flawed.

-Conclusion-

The creator has made a movie which makes it clear that he is talented. Whether you'll actually enjoy watching the film depends entirely upon how much patience you have for bad voice acting and figure animation and how rewarding you find the elements of artistry which could not be concealed even by the severe limitations of the production.

This is by far one of the best sci fi films I have ever seen. And this is coming from someone that finds most of today's sci fi films very lacking in almost all respects.

The story line is intelligent, imaginative, inspired and hopeful. Its the anchor that makes this film what it is, great sci fi.

While this film has lots of action, suspense and tense moments, it is NOT for the "blow'em-up-Fi" movie fans. Much like the film Primer 2004 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390384/), the story line requires too much thought on the part of the viewer.

One day this will be remade into a major motion picture, hopefully as an open film and without losing any of the story line.

Easily in the top 10 of open films. Right along with Pioneer One for example.

Fantastic animated movie with a unique storyline and engaging characters. The immense amount of effort that went into making this film is clearly visible and I would undoubtedly recommend it.

Great movie! I only wish that the fighting scenes had a more uplifting musical background.
