I don't know if the publisher intended it this way or not, but this film is very much like the influential 1973 Krieger essay in environmental ethics, "What's Wrong with Plastic Trees?" I liked the end with the person using artificial sweetener in his coffee. That was a very clever and nicely understated touch :)
I also liked that the publisher didn't try too hard to make it merely a dystopian vision of the future, but leave it (at least to some degree) an open question. I'd like to see this made into something longer with a bigger budget and special effects. It could be used to spark classroom discussion in conjunction with the Krieger article.

PS: Was this inspired by "What's Wrong with Plastic Trees?"

I've actually never read or heard of that essay. It sounds fascinating though and I'll be sure to look it up and read it. The biggest influence on this film is actually "Blade Runner" and the whole question of "What is it to be human?" and that then snowballed into basically "What truly defines X?" and that in turn turned into the basic backbone of this film.
