Hold Fast: Stories of maniac sailors, anarchist castaways, and the voyage of the S/V Pestilence... Over the course of two winters, four members of the Anarchist Yacht Clubb rescued a derelict boat from the inhospitable waters of Ft. Lauderdale, named it the S/V Pestilence, and sailed south to Haiti. Hold Fast describes what drew these friends to the ocean, and tells the story of what they discovered in the sea. It paints a picture of the S/V Pestilence in the context of all the sailing maniacs who have come before them, and ultimately attempts to suggest that the secret is always to begin.

great film. inspirational. takes sailing & adventure films/novels/genre onto the next level. could be subtitled "anarchist guide to sailing", or even, 'rough guide to sailing' or simply 'anarchists ahoy'. slocomb would be proud, and unlike tristan jones' accounts, this is factual.

Short take: makes me want to find a cheap boat. Well worth the time to download and watch. Just do it.

Longer take: many times it's more a narrated slideshow than a film, but obviously there was only a tiny (if any) budget, and with a limited crew it's certainly more important to focus on sailing rather than filming. So that lack of good footage is excusable, and it doesn't detract from the interesting story. I suspect the personal back-stories of these individuals would be pretty interesting too, so it's disappointing that there's so much focus on the what and how, instead of the who. The narrator's attraction to sailing and his personal experience comes through, but nobody else seems to have a voice. Maybe they were just shy?

Don't let my criticism stop you from viewing. The story itself overcomes any weakness in the telling. In fact, a slicker production and more organized structure wouldn't fit with the minimalist lifestyle depicted and implied - so going too far in that direction would make it seem fake. Overall, I really enjoyed this film and highly recommend it. Hopefully it becomes part of a series of stories.
